Tesla Referral Program Shifts to Software

Tesla has launched a new referral program in the US that pays owners in Full Self-Driving (Supervised) instead of rewarding car sales. A referred owner receives one free month of FSD, and the referrer gets a free month or a $99 Tesla Credit if the referred party begins paying for the subscription. At the same time, Tesla’s Refer and Earn terms no longer list any vehicle as a qualifying purchase for buyer or referrer rewards.

FSD Referral Mechanics and Restrictions

To share a link under app version 4.62.0 or later, users must be paying for FSD monthly or own it outright from before Tesla stopped selling it outright on February 14. Owners who received FSD through a one-year grant are excluded. The referred person must own a registered Tesla with compatible hardware, cannot have paid for FSD in the past 12 months, cannot have bought it outright, and cannot have received a free trial with a new car within the last 12 months.

When a friend converts to a paid subscription, subscribers receive a free month and outright owners receive a $99 credit. Credits expire after 12 months, cannot be cashed out, and are capped at 12 rewards per calendar year, allowing a maximum annual earning of a year of FSD or $1,188 in credits.

Removal of Vehicle Purchase Incentives

Vehicle purchase incentives have been entirely removed from the buyer benefits list. Buyer benefits now apply exclusively to solar panels. Referrer benefits cover solar, first demo drives (up to 30 over an account’s lifetime), and the new FSD referral. Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck appear only under loyalty benefits for existing owners buying another Tesla product, while Model S and Model X are unlisted.

Significance for European Readers

While this structural update currently applies to the US market, shifts in Tesla’s global incentive strategies and commercial focus toward software subscriptions directly impact how the manufacturer structures its customer acquisition models worldwide.

Practical Takeaway

Tesla owners looking to leverage the updated referral system can no longer offer vehicle purchase discounts to prospective buyers, but can instead earn software subscription credits by referring eligible existing owners to paid FSD or solar products.
